Located in the southwest corner of Spain, on the banks of the Guadiana River and right on the border with Portugal, Ayamonte is a charming and unspoilt town. Its narrow cobbled streets, sundrenched plazas, medieval quarter and historical building create a unique ambience for locals and visitors alike.

 

Surrounding area

The surrounding area is notable for its marismas ( salt marshes ) which form an important wildlife reserve, home to many species such as flamingos and herons. For centuries the crossing between Spain and Portugal was by ferry from Ayamonte to Vila Real de Santo Antonio, but there is now a modern suspension bridge over the Guadiana River which links the motorways on both sides of the border.

A visit to Ayamonte is a gastronomic experience. Local specialities include Chocos Fritos ( Fried Cuttlefish ), Gambas Blancas de Huelva ( Sweet white local prawns ), Atun Encebollado ( Tuna braised with onions ) and most famously Jamon Iberico de Bellota ( Cured Iberian Ham ) which is widely regarded as the world’s best cured ham.


The beach area of Ayamonte is known as Isla Canela, which boasts 7 kms of beautiful sandy beach with a pedestrian promenade running the full length to the Marina of Punta Moral. Several four and five star hotels are located here along with a tasteful mix of modern beachfront apartments.
There are many excellent golf courses within a short distance of Ayamonte, both in Spain and in Portugal. The interrsting thing is that Ayamonte is only 45 minutes drive from Faro Airport, which has daily flightsd from Ireland with both Ryanair and Aer LIngus.
